At Viking Developments, we’re proud to help our clients make their homes accessible and tailored to their needs through the Housing Adaptation Grant for People with a Disability. This grant is a fantastic opportunity for individuals with physical, sensory, mental health, or intellectual disabilities to improve how they enter and move around their homes.
With recent updates to the scheme, it’s now even more accessible and beneficial for those who need it most. Here’s everything you need to know about the grant, what it covers, and how Viking Developments can help you every step of the way.
What is the Housing Adaptation Grant for People with a Disability?
The Housing Adaptation Grant provides funding to modify homes for people with disabilities. This could include improving accessibility, adding essential facilities, or adapting spaces to make daily living easier.
Recent Changes (Effective 1 December 2024):
- Increased grant amounts and income limits.
- 100% grant coverage for adaptations if you fall within the lowest income bracket.
- Adjusted income assessment for the means test, making it easier to qualify.
What Does the Grant Cover?
The grant supports various types of work, such as:
- Adding ramps or other access solutions.
- Creating space for wheelchair access, including wider hallways and doorways.
- Adding an extension, such as a ground-floor bedroom or accessible bathroom.
- Installing accessible bathroom facilities, including accessible showers or ground-floor toilets
- Installing stairlifts, through-floor lifts, or fixed track hoists (though maintenance, servicing, and training costs are excluded).

The grant can also cover other work deemed necessary by the local authority to make your home more suitable for a person with a disability.
